Historic Sites » Historic Sites, 1917 Courthouse
One of the earliest struggles over preservation of historic structures in Chesterfield
occurred in 1916, with the decision to replace the county's 1749 courthouse. County residents, veterans groups, and the UDC all tried to save the original building, which was demolished in 1917. This Colonial Revival building, fronted by
a colossal Roman Doric portico and adorned with an octagonal domed belfry, was completed in 1918.
