Home School History Programs

 

These programs are designed for families with children of all ages and grade levels.  Cost: $5 per child. Adults free. Fridays 10 a.m. - noon. Details: Bryan Truzzie at 751-4946 or truzzieb@chesterfield.gov. To register, visit PayPal on this site.

 

 

Johnny Reb and Billy Yank: This program will address the hardship of the commomn soldier during the Civil War.  Students will learn about the food the soldiers ate, how they dealt with boredom, what motivated the soldiers to fight and understand the causes of the war. Students will gain an understanding on how the soldiers trained and equipment they carried on the march.  Discovering Chesterfield's Past: This program addresses life in rural Chesterfield long ago. Visit a replica of an early 20th century General Store and imagine life in a bygone era. Take a tour of the historic Courthouse Green where you will walk in the shoes of the Continental soldiers and learn about the fight for religious freedom during the Colonial period. Chesterfield Coal - From Fossisl Fuel to Electicity: Did you know that Midlothian was the site of the first  commercial coal mines in North America?  Take a guided tour and discover what coal mining was all about.  Explore the inpact  this community had on the region.  This activity addresses geology and cola mining.  Program meets in the amphitheater parking lot.  Midlothian MInes Park, 13286 North Woolridge Road, Midlothian, VA 23114 Friday, February 10, 2017 10 am-Noon $5, Friday, March 10, 2017 10 am-Noon $5 and Friday, April 7, 2017 10 am-Noon $5

From Fossil Fuel to Electricity

Life on the Plantation: Take a tour of Magnolia Grange and experience what 19th century was like on a plantation.  Tour the herb garden and learn about the importance of herbs for flavor, medicine, fragrance and pest control.  Make a fragrant sachet to take home and learn to play period children's games.  Magnolia Grange House Museum, 10020 Ironbridge Road, CHesterfield, VA 23832   Friday, March 24, 2017 10 am-Noon $5 and Friday, April 28, 2017 10 am-Noon $5

 1892 Old JailThe 1892 Historic Jail is opened for tours.  The adjacent Museum houses exhibits pertaining to the history of Chesterfield County.  Rotating exhibits are themed along historical events that affected county residents.  Please take a tour of the Museum.  Admission is free and $2 donations are accepted.
